Records of the Superintendent of College Buildings
Scope and Contents
Collection consists of the records of the Superintendent of College Buildings, dating from 1903-1923. During this timeframe, the position title changed from Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, Superintendent of the College Plant, and Superintendent of College Buildings. Files are arranged in alphabetical order by folder title. Records include two journals kept by Henry Herbert Austin, who was the Superintendent of the College Plant from 1910-1924, records of various buildings (including clubhouses, the boathouse, Lake Waban Laundry and the Land Army Training Camp) and their treatment or modifications, including plans, equipment, correspondence with contractors, Wellesley offices, and departments, records of events held and resources used (electricity, coal), records of employees, financial records, statements, and insurance records, records of fire protection, meteorological reports. Includes records relating to the town of Wellesley and the state of Massachusetts.

Biographical / Historical
Emerson Oren Perkins held the position of Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds since 1899 (in years previous, the position was not listed in the College Catalogs). In 1907 Perkins’ title changed to Superintendent of the College Plant. Henry Herbert Austin replaced him as Superintendent of the College Plant in 1910, and held the position until 1924. In the 1924-1925 College Catalog, the position is no longer listed. In 1925, Wilford Priest Hooper was brought on as Superintendent of College Buildings. Frederick Dutton Woods was the Superintendent of Grounds from 1904 until 1936. In 1936 Wilford Priest Hooper’s title changed to Superintendent of College Buildings and Grounds. The position of Superintendent of Grounds is not listed in the College Catalog in years preceding 1904.
