Biographical / Historical
Ellen Fitz Pendleton was President of Wellesley College from 1911-1936. She was born in Westerly, Rhode Island, in 1864, and passed away shortly after retiring from Wellesley College in 1936. She was a member of Wellesley's Class of 1886. After graduating she worker as a tutor until 1888, when she became an instructor in mathematics. She earned a master's degree from Wellesley College in 1891. From 1897-1901 she was the Secretary of the College. From 1901-1911 she served as Associate Professor of Mathematics, Dean, and Head of College Hall. While Pendleton was President, the endowment grow substantially to almost $10 million. She was President when College Hall burned in a fire in 1914, and oversaw fundraising and construction efforts to rebuild the college.
