Biographical / Historical

The Department of Speech was described in the Bulletin as "[offering] courses, and also individual work without academic credit, for students who wish to improve the quality of their oral English." The college did not offer a major in Speech; the discipline was related to theatre studies. Different courses offered in the 1960s included Fundamentals of Speech, Speaking and Discussion, Oral Interpretation of Literature, as well as the more theater-focused Shakespeare in the Theatre, Early Modern Theatre, Contemporary Theatre, Plays, Production, and Performance, and History of the Theater. 1965-1966 was the last year these courses were offered as part of the Speech Department. In 1966 the Speech Department was discontinued, and the college initiated an extradepartmental program in Theatre Studies, which counted as related work for an English Major.
