Biographical / Historical
The Institutional Review Board (IRB) was originally called the Committee on the Use of Humans as Experimental Subjects. Federal policy for the protection of human subjects was established in 1974 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and is known as “The Common Rule." The IRB reviews all planned research involving human subjects, approves or rejects research proposals involving human subjects, and monitors said research to protect human subjects. The IRB is a part of Wellesley College's Office of Sponsored Research.
