Biographical / Historical

Lewis Kennedy Morse was Treasurer of Wellesley College from 1914-1928. Morse’s administration followed that of Alpheus Holmes Hardy, who had been Treasurer from 1895 until January 1, 1914. Lewis Kennedy Morse had been elected to the Board of Trustees of the College in November, 1912, and had served as Assistant Treasurer since May, 1913. Morse took over the office on January 1, 1914. On March 17, 1914, College Hall burned in a fire, necessitating an enormous fundraising effort in the form of the Restoration Fund. In April, 1914, the Treasurer’s office in Boston moved from the Tremont Building to 201 Devonshire Street. Morse’s daughter and wife both attended Wellesley College. Morse resigned in January, 1928. James Dean was Treasurer unanimously elected by the Board of Trustees in 1928, and served until 1942.
