Records of the Class of 1923, dating from 1909-1997, consisting of memorabilia from events, course materials, financial records and the alumnae newsletter, reunion records, scrapbooks, photo albums and photographs; concerning student and alumnae activities. Includes the doctoral dissertation and accompanying slides of class member Janet K. Smith.

Biographical / Historical

Mary Pelton Cooper (married name Jewett) lived in Spokane, Washington. While at Wellesley, she majored in English, was a member of the Shakespeare Society, and was a Village Senior in 1922-1923. She was a Vice President of the Intercollegiate Community Service Association (ICSA) her freshman year. After graduating, she taught history. In 1925 she married George Frederick Jewett; they had a daughter and a son. She was a trustee of the college, and her husband's mother and daughter also attended Wellesley. The Jewett Art Center was built in 1958 as a gift from her family, and included the Mary Cooper Jewett Art Building, named after Mary.
