Scope and Contents

Series V. Administrative records includes building plans, records of building construction and alterations, records of the Faculty Committee on the Library Building including slides, meeting minutes, and reports; background material on this history of the library, a book binding manual, records of the Alumnae Library Fund Committee, the Library Committee, and the Library Council, news clippings about the library, conference records, records of department libraries, account books (1885-1910) and allocation of the Library Fund, expenditure and funding records for various departments, interlibrary loan statistics, files on individual librarians, staff meetings, and staff news, records on reference services and tours of the library, records of the Library’s rare books and the Treasure Room, pamphlets, and files on the Library’s activities during World War I and World War II.

Biographical / Historical

The name files in Box 5 include papers of previous librarians. Lydia Boker Godfrey was the Library Cataloguer from 1884 to 1886, Superintendent of the Catalogue Department and Lecturer on Bibliography from 1887 to 1890, Reference Librarian and Instructor in Bibliography from 1891 to 1893 and Librarian and Instructor in Bibliography from 1894 to 1903. Ethel Dane Roberts was the Assistant Librarian from 1909-1915, Acting Librarian from 1915-1916, and the Librarian from 1917 to 1936. Blanche Prichard McCrum was the Librarian from 1937-1947. Florence Louise King was the Librarian from August, 1948 to 1953. Helen Margaret Brown was the Librarian in from 1953 to 1977. Hannah Dustin French was the Order Librarian (1939-1944) as well as the Research Librarian in Charge of Special Collections (1944-1972), and was the founder of Wellesley’s Book Arts Laboratory.
