Series III. Margaret Lathrop Law papers, 1920-1980
Scope and Contents
Records of the Class of 1912, dating from 1836-2003, consisting of course materials, event programs, memorabilia, records of admission, reunion materials, meeting minutes, correspondence, financial records and Treasurer’s Reports, notebooks, scrapbooks, diaries, photo albums and slides; concerning class meetings and the social and academic activities of members of the class as undergraduates, and information on reunions, careers and activities of members of the class as alumnae. Collection includes some papers of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, who was a journalist and author known for her advocacy for women's suffrage and conservation of the Everglades. Of note are Lucy Robert’s slides from travel in East and Southeast Asia in the 1950s, and Elizabeth Hart Pennell’s records from her time volunteering in Europe with the YMCA during World War I and with the Red Cross during World War II. Collection also includes manuscripts and publications of authors Christine Turner Curtis and Margaret Lathrop Law.

Biographical / Historical
Margaret Lathrop Law was from South Carolina, and later lived in Pennsylvania. While at Wellesley she was in the Shakespeare Society. She played the role of "Reginald Barking" in her class' Sophomore Play, "The Title Mart," and was one of the Magazine Editors of The Wellesley College News. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Wellesley in 1912, and went on to earn a certificate from the Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women (Ambler, Pennsylvania) and her Master's degree in English Literature from the University of Pennsylvania in 1920. In 1932, October 6, The Wellesley News reported that she had just published a book of poetry, “Horizon Smoke,” and that she had articles published in numerous magazines (including the Saturday Evening Post, the Independent, Architecture, the House Beautiful, and McCall’s), as well as published verse in periodicals (including for the poetry page of the Literary Digest). She continued her studies at the School of Industrial Art (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) in 1939.
